Photophon
solo exhibition
Resonance
Lydgalleriet (in the scope of Borealis 2014)
Skostredet 16, Bergen, Norway
19 march > 12 april 2014

Photophon is based on the photoacoustic principle that was discovered at the end of the 19th century by Alexander Graham Bell. According to this principle, a strong light source can be converted into an acoustic wave due to absorption and thermal excitation. Bells research shows that any material comes with a sonority that will be revealed by hitting it with a strong beam of light. Photophon consists of 3 photophonic objects each playing tones created by strong light beams through rotating discs. With Photophon, Jacobs intends to provide a certain kind of musicalityin the form of an installation, not of a playable instrument. Photophon is produced by Intro in situ, Maastricht, part of the Resonance Network and developed in collaboration with the Laboratory of Acoustics and Thermal Physics, KU Leuven.

Low-key sound techniques
workshop
Villa Arson
Nice, France
25 march > 29 march 2014

The workshop deals with both low-key methods for recording in the field and creating ways to diffuse those recordings. Low-key techniques can be seen as tools for listening and responding to a certain sonic environment and/or recorded event. Moving a step back from an ideal listening situation and a moving into a highly subjective listening environment. The workshop focuses on discovering different edges in a listening process, extending listening thresholds. During the workshop we will make sonic disposable tools and look into different technologies that are different from the ones typically found on the market. The workshop is focussed on hands-on experiences.

Induction Series #4
group exhibition
Sense of Sound
Z33
Zuivelmarkt 33, Hasselt, Belgium
02 march > 25 may 2014

Sound and movement are inextricably linked together. Movement and vibrations turn into audible sound and back again. In 'Sense of Sound' sound manifests itself in many shapes and forms: vibrations, magnetic fields, electrical discharges or waves of feedback. But the various works have one thing in common: sounds can always be traced back to friction that makes the world move. From the resonance on your skull to your middle ear or from fluctuating voltage to a vibrating magnet. Sound is created when energy escapes and through air or materials transforms itself into a sensory sensation.
Sense of Sound is a cooperation between Z33 and Overtoon, a production facility in Brussels and a stage for sound and media art.
All the works of art in the exhibition are new productions created by current or future Overtoon residents. With works by Gert Aertsen, Christoph De Boeck, Aernoudt Jacobs, Stefan Piat, Katerina Undo, Jeroen Uyttendaele and Jeroen Vandesande.

The Photophon Principle is based on the photoacoustic principle that was discovered at the end of the 19th century by Alexander Graham Bell. According to this principle, a strong light source can be converted into an acoustic wave due to absorption and thermal excitation. Bell's research shows that any material comes with a sonority that will be revealed by hitting it with a strong beam of light. In the exhibition a prototype of the original work will be shown to illustrate this principle. The prototype consists of a photophonic object playing tones created by strong light beams through a rotating disc. With Photophon, Jacobs intends to provide a certain kind of musicality: "but in the form of an installation, not of a playable instrument", he explains.

Cause and nature of sound
solo exhibition
coproduced by Resonance, Le Bon Acceuill and Overtoon
Le bon Acceuil
74, canal Saint-Martin, 35700 Rennes, France
15 jan > 22 feb 2014

The exhibition is presented as part of "On the Sensations of Tone", a series of exhibitions and residencies dedicated to the relationship between 'sound' in the visual arts and the history of acoustics, focused on scientific instruments and historical collections of scientific instruments from the 19th century.
"Cause and nature of sound" is curated by Damien Simon and proposes several of Jacobs' works around acoustic phenomena. Jacobs has been researching these phenomena for years and this is an ideal occasion to present different works within the above themes. This is also his first solo exhibition in France.

Koolmijnenkaai 30, Brussels, Belgium
17 april > 19 may 2013

Overtoon launches its activities of the year with an exhibition at iMAL, partner of Art Brussels 2013. The exhibition presents new installations combined with prototypes or work-in-progress produced by Christophe De Boeck, Aernoudt Jacobs and artists-in-residence: Jeroen Uyttendaele and Jeroen Vandesande. The show will give you a glimpse of their working process and is completed with some recent and older work

Opening night - vernissage & concert Overtoon invites field recordist and sound artist Francisco Lopez to join Aernoudt Jacobs in a concert with Jacobs' Phantom Melodies installation on the opening night. This is an opportunity to present the CD LITH, a collaboration of Francisco Lopez and Aernoudt Jacobs which is just released on the Brussels Sub Rosa label.

relocation of the office and workspaces from 2013
residencies, research, production, distribution
platform for sound art
Vaartstraat 45, 9th floor, Brussels

Overtoon has been running, from its inception in 2005, as a backbone to develop the artistic practice of Aernoudt Jacobs. Since 2012, Christoph De Boeck has joined to co-direct the organization. From January 2013 Overtoon will be consolidating and expanding. It has received a structural subsidy from the Flemish Government and will operate with Saartje Geerts as a new flexible and half-open production platform producing the work of both artists. It will also offer yearly long-term residencies to artists with the aim to produce their works; they participate in our structure and can benefit fully from our facilities.
In 2013 Jeroen Uyttendaele and Jeroen Vandesande will be the resident artists. On a more fleeting level Overtoon will be supporting the ongoing experiments of other artists. This way Overtoon wants to support artists and give new impulses to the field of sound and media art.

12 march 2012 > 1 april 2012

Aernoudt Jacobs will be working mainly on the project 'String Theories'.
The project revolves around the concept of sound induction into strings
and early visualisation techniques from the 19th century. He will be investigating
the project as an installation and/or a performance instrument. The concept of
the instrument has already been developed. During the residency he will built the
instrument and research further on the visualisation of sound.

STUK / Displaced Sounds
Naamsestraat 96, Leuven, Belgium
22 sep > 13 nov 2011

"In our daily environment we are not only faced with a murmur of sounds
that are the result of what we do, but also with the inherent dynamic
phenomena that affect these sounds. This intertwinement transforms the perception
of our daily environment into an ephemeral and subjective sound field."

call__waiting fot non-generic people
composition/sound art project
Palais De Tokyo
'Repondeur' Curated by Rahma Khazam
Palais De Tokyo - Paris, France
from april 2011

Contribution for a composition to the 'Repondeur', an answering machine and podacst.
Some years ago I was commissioned by an international broadcast company to compose a 'call waiting' track.
The assignment appealed strongly to me, however, the proposition I made was dismissed as 'not suitable for
generic people'. Hence the title of the track. The track for the 'Repondeur' is a remixed version.
The base melody for the track was found rather by accident by applying a vocoder-preset to a field recording.
The other layers are a combination field recordings and recordings I made during cryogenic experiments.
